Business agility or Agile model is the ability of a business to rapidly respond to the ever changing business environment. Business Agility is the ability of an organization to rapidly adapt to market and environmental changes in productive and cost-effective manner. In Agile, the entire business cycle is broken down into iterations.

At Pegasus InfoCorp, it is our strong belief that when it comes to Agile in Business, the vitals are: collaboration, continuous improvement business value and early feedback.

Every iteration in a typical agile modeling process would go something like this:

  • Listen for user stories from the customer's viewpoint.
  • Draw a logical workflow model to gain an approval for the business decisions represented in the user story.
  • Create individual user stories based on the workflow.
  • Develop some display prototypes to show demonstrate the interface to the customer.
  • Implement feedback from the prototypes, modify the system accordingly.

In business, projects can be complex with uncertain outcomes and goals that can change over time. Traditionally these issues were dealt with by planning experts that would attempt to pre-determine every possible detail prior to implementation; however, in many situations, even the most carefully thought out projects will be impossibly difficult to manage. Agile techniques, originating from the software development community, represent an alternative approach to the classic prescriptive planning approaches to management. The main focus of agile methods is to address the issues of complexity, uncertainty, and dynamic goals, by making planning and execution work in parallel rather than in sequence to eliminate unnecessary planning activity, and the resulting unnecessary work.

Agile methodology is a collection of innovative, user-centered approaches to systems development. Agile practices are extremely popular and becoming accepted widely. Agile methods can be credited with many successful systems development projects and in numerous cases even credited with rescuing companies from a failing system that was designed using a structured methodology. Project management is vital, so the agile approach tries to define an overall system plan quickly, develop and release software quickly.

The basic principles of agile are providing rapid feedback, exceptional quality of work, simplicity, and ease of embracing change.

Other important concepts that support the agile approach are the idea of using open and honest communication; working with people’s natural tendencies; claiming responsibility for a task; locally adapting the approach you are learning for agile development and seeking to use honest measurement.

The major principles to remember are:

  1. Rapid feedback: Since there is the iteration approach, timely feedback is received that helps in fixing issues that usually pile up to form bigger road blocks.
  2. Incremental changes: This means to make smallest change possible that still results in differencein the development efforts.
  3. Simplicity: It is estimated that 81% of the business problems can be resolved with simplicity.
  4. Quality work:The principle stems from the idea that all participants want to do quality work.

The agile enterprise strives to make change a routine part of organizational life to reduce or eliminate the organizational trauma that weakens many businesses attempting to adapt to new markets and environments. The agile enterprise views itself as an integral component of a larger system whose activities produce a ripple effect of change both within the enterprise itself and the broader system. The agile enterprise is able to adjust to and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

Agile methods integrate planning with execution allowing an organization to "search" for an optimal ordering of work tasks and to adjust to changing requirements. The major causes of chaos on a project include incomplete understanding of project components, incomplete understanding of component interactions and changing requirements. Sometimes requirements change as a greater understanding of the project components unfolds over time. Requirements also change due to changing needs and wants of the stakeholders. The agile approach allows a team or organization of collective trust, competence and motivation to implement successful projects quickly by only focusing on a small set of details in any change iteration. This is in contrast to non-agile in which all the details necessary for completion are generally taken to be foreseeable and have equal priority inside of one large iteration.

Based on a popular finding, we observe that the following best practices that leaders adopt to become more agile:

  • Training in expertise
  • Build expertise, diverse leaders and management teams
  • Pace up decision making
  • Use data and analytics to run the business
  • Prioritize strategic decisions
  • Prepare your ecosystems to respond quickly

Our idea at Pegasus InfoCorp is that we allow Individual contributors to integrate their work to achieve solid results. We strongly believe that the agile approach is not based just on results. It is based on values, principles, and practices. Our studies have shown that agility helps leaders stand apart from other companies on nearly every dimension. Agility helps a business to make faster decisions, using analytics to run the business.
